PERFORMING ARTS

Oslo in a music-loving city and there is live music somewhere in the city on any night of the week. The likes of Adele, Justin Bieber, and Rihanna play at the vast but soulless Telenor Arena (Widerheveien 1, www.telenorarena.no), while the smaller but much better-located Spektrum (Sonja Henies plass 2, www.oslospektrum.no) also welcomes major artists and events.

Smaller bands and shows are held almost every night at one of the three downtown venues part of the Rockefeller group ( www.rockefeller.no), all located on Torggata. Tickets go fast for any international names, so be sure to check out any concerts you might want to attend in advance of your arrival.

The National Theater (National Theatret) (Johanne Dybwads plass 1, tel. 22 00 14 00, www.nationaltheatret.no) is an imposing 19th-century home to playwrights and artists built from private funds to mark the secession from Sweden. The writers of the opening performances, Ludvig Holberg, Henrik Ibsen, and Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson, are immortalized in statues out front, and their names are carved in the stonework on the front facade. Today the theater is Oslo’s premier arts venue, hosting everything from Shakespeare to the International Ibsen Festival.

The Oslo Philharmonic (Oslo Filharmonien) ( www.ofo.no), the city’s symphony orchestra, has a proud history that can be traced back to the days of Edvard Grieg. Since 2013, Russian Vasily Petrenko has been chief conductor of the orchestra, which gives over 100 concerts a year, many at its home Oslo Concert House (Oslo Konserthus) (Munkedamsveien 14, tel. 23 11 31 11, www.oslokonserthus.no). In addition to the many performances from the city orchestra, the concert house hosts a Jazz Café on most Saturday afternoons in Glasshuset, for which tickets start at a very reasonable 125kr.

Home of the Norwegian National Opera and Ballet (Den Norske Opera & Ballett), Oslo Opera House (Operahuset) (Kirsten Flagstads plass 1, tel. 21 42 21 21, www.operaen.no) hosts regular free performances on its roof and in the café, alongside the scheduled program. The venue holds regular opera and ballet performances throughout the year.

Nordisk Film Kino runs seven cinemas across Oslo with international releases alongside Norwegian films. International films will often have Norwegian subtitles, and only children’s films tend to be dubbed. If in doubt, ask in advance. The biggest of the cinemas is Colosseum kino (Fridtjof Nansens vei 8, Majorstuen), while Klingenberg kino (Olav Vs gate 4) is most convenient for those downtown.
